Today is a typical hot July day here in Mapleton Utah. The cool thing about working in the greenhouse is the nice cooling pads that supply plenty of cool air as the fans on the opposite end of the greenhouse draw the air through the pads saturated with cool water. Today it was 102 degrees here in Mapleton Utah, outside, in the greenhouse its only 83 degrees.
I know we have had a rough strawberry season this year. But the Hanging baskets have been a huge success. They have been averaging 2-3 pounds of delicious berry's.

Wow, I'm amazed at the speed of time. Its hard to believe that a whole month has slipped by since my last post. I think we could all use a big break from the wintery weather. Of course if you've lived in Utah for any amount of time, we all know that winter has a horrible habit of lingering on. To me, That's ok, just as long as we have a successful spring in the greenhouse. After all, its the snowy days and nights that sustain us through the hot dry months we can experience here in Utah.
Much has happened since the last "post". The greenhouse is definitely bursting at the seams. Plants are growing in every little square inch. We have some unbelieveable "Hanging Baskets" that will be ready just in time for "Mothers Day". Oh my, we have some amazing Plants for your gardening pleasure, from Asiatic Lillies to rhubarb to Petunia's to ground covers, to Trees and Shrubs,, we have many varieties of Daylillies, to everyones favorite, "Bleeding Hearts" (Dicentra), The original color pink and a new white one. These plants are absolutely stunning. Spring is in the air, and with that comes getting your vegetable gardens ready for planting. We have a huge variety of vegetable plants for you to choose from. Tomatoe's, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cukes, squash, pumpkins, beans, and the list goes on. Our prices are competitive and our quality is unmatched. We are located at 1550 West 2600 South just off hwy 89 here in Mapleton, Utah. We are the second greenhouse/nursery across from all the white barns. We are "Maple Mountain Greenhouse & Strawberry Farm". And yes, we will have the most tasty strawberry for you to pick in our Strawberry Greenhouse. Oh, by the way, we have FOUR greenhouses. So if you only see one, you've gone to the wrong place. We'll watch for you, and until next time, "I'll see you in the greenhouse".

Spring is a wonderful time of the year. I love Spring because it brings new life to the earth, a new begining of sorts. The problem here in Utah though, is that it doesn't last very long. It's almost as though we go from winter right into summer. I do however still enjoy what little spring time we get. I love to watch the bulbs sending their new growth up through the soil. I love to see the birds return, they bring back the beautiful songs thats music to my ears. The beautiful creations of Mother earth show their amazing colors and share a wonderful aroma that does the soul good.
I hope all of you can get excited about getting out in your yards and begin shaping things up. I would remind you, those of you who live close, that we have an awesome gardening class we are teaching every Tuesday night down at the Mapleton City Offices. Come join in in the many things we will be teaching. If anything, show up to the "Hands On In The Greenhouse" portion of the class. Go to www.mapleton.org and look in the "Parks and Recreation" section, it'll give you more info. I hope you have a wonderful spring, and don't forget where we are on South Hwy 89 on the very farthest part of Mapleton. We are directly across from all the white barns. If you don't see any white barns, you're at the wrong place. Keep going 1/2 mile more. After all, people know us as MAPLE MOUNTAIN GREENHOUSE & STRAWBERRY FARM. We have the tastiest Strawberry in Utah. Come see for yourselves. Don't drive off if you don't see the berries in the field, because we are growing them in the greenhouse this year. Hope to see you soon, and as always, "I'll see you in the greenhouse"

Today I heard Thunder and saw a little lightning. Kind of odd for this time of year. Hello everyone from the "Gardens edge". Todays another one of those days I love to spend my time in the greenhouse. We have been talking to alot of people about the Gardening classes Mapleton City is going to be sponsering starting on February 10th at the city multi-purpose room here in good ole Mapleton. Each Tuesday night beginning February 10th until April 27th you can come and learn ways to improve your gardening skills. You can learn proper pruning methods with local experts. You can rub shoulders with your neighbors and have a great time learning new ways to have a successful garden this year.
With the economic stress thats right on alot of our heals, I think this year is a great year to grow your own vegetables right in your own back yard, and spend a little time sprucing up your best investment, your house and property. We'll be talking about everything from getting started, seed selection, where to buy seeds, site preparation, how to plan the perfect garden layout. Pruning of your fruit trees and shrubs and roses, what types of "Dormant oils" to spray on your fruit trees. How to plant your seeds and get them started indoors. You'll learn the proper way to prune your raspberries, how to have a successful strawberry patch. The best part of the class I'm anxious for is the "Hands On In The Greenhouse" classes. These classes will be every other Tuesday, and will be provided by a local Greenhouse Company right here in Mapleton. You'll learn more info on this at the first class on February 10th. So what are you waiting for. Call Mapleton City and sign up for a wonderful experience, And Bring A friend or neighbor. Until next time, We'll see your Noses in "The Foothill Breeze" gardening column, "The Garden's Edge".

When its January 19th and the outside temps read 23 degrees, its hard to imagine it could be any different in the greenhouse. As I walked from the house, where I live, to the greenhouse, where I work, I could feel the cold cutting right to my bones. But as soon as I walked into the greenhouse, I immediately had to start peeling the layers of clothes I had on. I took a look at the thermometer inside the greenhouse, guess what it said.....thermometers don't talk silly, but it read 72.8 degrees. AAHHHH, what a feeling indeed. If any of you who live close want to come by and experience it first hand, I welcome you. We are currently getting things ready for the arrival of about 50,000 little seedling plugs (bedding plants) next month. We also have over 70 seedling flats growing in our seedling chambers. For those of you who are going to attend the City of Mapleton's gardening classes Feb, Mar, and April, these little guys will be a part of a series of "Hands on in the greenhouse" classes. Remember to contact Mapleton City to register for the classes. The phone number to call is 801-489-5655, and be sure to ask for either Stacy or Mariah. If they aren't available, just speak with the operator and she'll fix ya up. I can hardly wait for Feb 10th, the night of the first class. Oh, by the way, Classes begin Feb 10 at 7:30 pm. Bring a friend, neighbor or relative. We hope this puts a little "gardening bug" in you to start thinking about Spring.

What an exciting time of the year. I am excited to tell you all about the great gardening class we are about to embark in. Beginning February 10th, Mapleton City will be hosting a gardening class that will run for one (1) hour each Tuesday night. It will be held at the Mapleton City offices, here in Mapleton of course. It will go from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The gardening classes will run through April. We are pleased to announce that two of the classes each month will be hands on in the greenhouse. What an awesome opportunity to learn. The classes will feature myself, Mark Van Wagoner and a local favorite gardening expert, Mike Allen as well as other local gardening professionals from tree pruning, which plants to plant when, how to design a garden (what to grow next to what), diseases/pest in the garden, watering (designing an efficient watering system), container gardening and much much more. If you would like more info about how to sign up, call the Mapleton city offices at 801-489-5565 and ask for Stacey or Mariah. I can hardly wait. We hope to see you there, and make sure you tell a friend or two. Let me know what you think at gardensedge@q.com or strawberryfarm03@msn.com. I look forward to meeting you and helping with your gardening needs, and until then, I'll look for you on "The Gardens Edge" gardening column in the foothill breeze newspaper.
